In 2024, 6,240 colleges are active over U.S. 50 states and territories. By school types, there are 2,010 public and 4,230 private schools, and by school level, there are 2,891 four-years (or high) colleges, 1,622 community colleges (2-4 years college), and 1,727 vocational/trade schools.
The average tuition & fees of U.S. colleges is $15,385 for state residents and $21,017 for out-of-state students. A total of 18,775,416 students enrolled in U.S. colleges last year. For the first-time enrolled students, the average acceptance rate is 72.90% and the average SAT score is 1,168.

  • California has the most schools with 650 schools and Alaska has the least schools with 9 schools.
  • Vermont schools have the tightest (lowest) acceptance rate with 61.45% and Wyoming schools have the affordable (highest) rate with 95.98%.
  • Vermont schools have the highest SAT score with 1,327 and West Virginia schools have the lowest SAT score with 1,015.
  • Vermont schools have the highest tuition & fees with $40,612 and North Dakota schools have the lowest tuition & fees with $11,130.
  • California schools have the most enrolled students with 2,512,947 and Alaska schools have the least students with 20,152.
