In 2023, 6,271 colleges are active over U.S. 50 states and territories. By school types, there are 1,990 public and 4,281 private schools, and by school level, there are 2,830 four-years (or high) colleges, 1,732 community colleges (2-4 years college), and 1,709 vocational/trade schools.
The average tuition & fees of U.S. colleges is $15,305 for state residents and $20,343 for out-of-state students. A total of 18,887,557 students enrolled in U.S. colleges last year. For the first-time enrolled students, the average acceptance rate is 73.06% and the average SAT score is 1,152.
The following list describes the highest/lowest State in perspectives of key academic factors. For the admission statistics such as acceptance rate and SAT score, we only used the admission data of four-years colleges.
  • California has the most schools with 658 schools and Alaska has the least schools with 9 schools.
  • Rhode Island schools have the tightest (lowest) acceptance rate with 61.87% and Wyoming schools have the affordable (highest) rate with 96.78%.
  • Vermont schools have the highest SAT score with 1,279 and Kansas schools have the lowest SAT score with 963.
  • Vermont schools have the highest tuition & fees with $38,904 and North Dakota schools have the lowest tuition & fees with $11,055.
  • California schools have the most enrolled students with 2,544,194 and Alaska schools have the least students with 20,929.
